Amrita Datta is a socio-cultural designer, educator, and researcher at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, where she serves as an Assistant Professor of Visual Communication Design. As a designer in the United States, she fosters cultural conversations through her research, focusing on various personal, social, and ideological themes. Her design practice uses people-centered methods to address issues important to different communities, with the goal of improving understanding.
Datta earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication Design from Kent State University, focusing on user experience. She then relocated to Indiana to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Design Research and Strategy at Indiana University (Indianapolis), specializing in design thinking. Datta’s experience working in India, the Czech Republic, and the United States has given her incredible opportunities, including showcasing her design vision, recognizing consumer trends, and learning design practices. She believes her exposure to techniques including user-experience design, branding development, experimental graphic design, and connected product interfaces has enabled her to contribute to any design-oriented task quickly.
As an educator, Datta has led programs in schools in South Korea, Chile, and India, creating international opportunities for her undergraduate students. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals both nationally and internationally. She is a founding member of the South Asian Design Educators Alliance (SADEA).
